Holiday greeting cards have been a staple of ad agencies for decades. They give copywriters, designers and producers a chance to spread their wings a little and speak, for a change, solely to the like-minded—other agencies and clients. AdWeek’s AdFreak offers up the best and worst holiday greetings of 2009. Hat tip to Goodby, Silverstein & Partners’ “New School vs. Old School“. Yahoo! Labs wins seven awards
There are people here at Yahoo! with degrees in science. As proof, Yahoo! eggheads won no fewer than seven awards for peer-reviewed papers at recent big-wheel science and industry conferences. We’re not sure what “Collaborative Filtering with Temporal Dynamics” actually means—hey, we’re in the marketing department—but it sounds pretty whiz-bang. For more, see Yodel Anecdotal.
“Give it a Ponder” goes big
A few weeks ago, we spotlighted James Lipton’s clever LG Mobile PSA, “Give it a Ponder” video, which warns youngsters about saying too much when texting. Since then, MediaBistro’s Agency Spy reports, the effort has gone way public, with a widespread print campaign and a fresh, and very funny, viral video.

Creative Spotlight: Spoofing Dove’s “Evolution” and MTV’s “Jersey Shore”
You may have seen Dove’s now famous “Evolution” viral vid, which shows how images can be manipulated in nefarious ways to make consumers feel bad enough about themselves to make them buy beauty products. It was recently spoofed pretty brilliantly on Funny or Die by “Charmed” star, Alyssa Milano, who used the format to take a shot at hear least favorite show, MTV’s “Jersey Shore.”
