Ad News and Views from Around the Web

Good things ahead; kissing 2009 goodbye; creatives celebrated in “Art & Copy”; James Lipton’s PSA to teens, and more

Advertising back in the game
Writing in BNET Advertising, Jim Edwards finds signs of recovery in the ad space. “According to a range of companies across TV, web and publishing,” says Edwards, “BNET noted that a recovery in advertising may be under way… as revenues at agency holding companies ticked up, at least sequentially.”

2010’s “going to be great”
Speaking of the rising tide, iMedia Connection’s Rob Rose sees signs that good things are ahead for advertising and the Web economy in general. Check out the optimism over there…

A film all about you, the agency creatives
By now you’ve probably seen the viral video, “Yahoo! Hearts Creatives,” about the struggle among creative agency folks, management and clients. Recently released, however, is a full-length documentary film on the topic. Directed by well-known documentarian, Doug Pray, “Art & Copy” explores the nexus of advertising, inspiration and artistic creation among some of advertising’s most elite creatives. The best line from the trailer: “Advertising makes food taste better, it makes cars run better, it changes the perception of everything…” And it’s your creatives who make it so. Enjoy!

Creative Spotlight I: Before you text, give it a ponder
James Lipton, the famously bearded Hollywood interviewer known best for his work on A&E’s “Inside the Actors’ Studio” stars in a PSA, created by LG and Young & Rubicam, to get teens to think before they go around texting gossip. It gets the award for best use of a faux beard in a PSA. Thanks to AdFreak for pointing us to this one.

Creative Spotlight II: A Band Aid is no cure for chronic foot problems
The author of this post got a letter, hand addressed, in the snail mail the other day. It was from the neighborhood podiatrist advertising her services and included, of all things, a Band Aid brand bandage stabled to the top of the letter. “As for the Band Aid,” she writes in closing, “feel to use it as necessary. But don’t put a Band Aid over what might be a chronic foot problem.” Sometimes, old-fashioned marketing can really get your attention and drive traffic to your site—even if your feet are in good shape. Well done, Doc!
